Hermant’s work explores themes of communication, gender, and labor. Imbued with a profound sense of embodiment, her large-scale works play with and transform the languages and expectations of materials to create works that relate to the body and the body’s experience of space or spaces.

In Spatial Drawings, she utilizes wood-bending techniques to effect surprising material and spatial transformations. The exhibition is comprised of several large-scale sculptures made of interconnected, hand-bent, solid hardwood planks whose curves and twists create “drawings” in three-dimensional space. The bends and twists of the planks and the ways in which the pieces “perform” their own malleability are suggestive of the possible angles, contortions and potential energies of the body, and their oscillating structure guide the viewer’s movement through space. Hermant is also interested in the processes of drawing in space, often at a large scale and with unexpected materials, and in particular with how the drawn line unfolds and how its formal aspects interact to immerse the viewer in the work.
